The First Three Things to Do After Getting Engaged

Writer: Jennifer HarderJennifer Harder

First off, congratulations on your engagement! Get used to hearing that, as well as requests to see your gorgeous bling. So, you've said yes, scheduled your next manicure appointment, and called your great Aunt Sally to tell her the good news, now what? Read below to see the first few things you should do immediately after getting engaged to make the most of your wedding planning journey.

  1. Enjoy the moment! You may have told your family and closest friends already, but once you post it on social media, get ready for the barrage of questions such as "how did he propose?" "have you set your date yet?" and the potentially awkward "am I invited to the wedding?" Take a few moments (days, weeks, months even) to enjoy the happy feeling of elation just knowing that you've found your person and you two will spend the rest of your lives together. Even if you don't consider yourself to be much of a "private" person, once the news it out, there's no going back, so take some time to savor that moment.

  2. Now the planning begins! The most important thing to remember is that this is your and your fiance's special day. Talk to your fiance to get an idea of what he is looking for with the ceremony and reception, and the entire day/weekend experience. Gauge level of formality, how many guests, location, time of the year, and overall vide/aesthetic. It's perfectly fine if you don't see eye to eye on everything. This isn't the time to decide on details, just broad and general discussion at this point.

  3. Set a budget and narrow down your date. These two go hand-in-hand because if you will have a longer engagement, you likely will have more time to save up, so your budget may be bigger. If you know that you want to get married within a certain time frame, that will inform how big your budget will be because you'll know how much you can realistically set aside or get from parents/family members to contribute within that time.

So there you have it bride-to-be, your first three things to do after getting engaged (although #3 is a two-for-one.) Contact your coordinator if you have any questions. Happy Planning!
